Marvel Head Explains The Full Story Behind Zendaya's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Character Michelle (aka MJ)

Marvel Head Explains The Full Story Behind Zendaya's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Character Michelle (aka MJ)

Whether you’ve seen Spider-Man: Homecoming once, or twice, or even five times (guilty over here!), you might still be confused about the story behind Zendaya‘s character, Michelle.

You’ve heard all the other stories about Michelle, how she shares a last name with Vulture, and how she refers to herself as “MJ” in the film as well…so Marvel head Kevin Feige took time out to fully explain just who Michelle is.

One thing is for certain though — Michelle IS NOT, nor has she ever been, Mary Jane Watson.

“We never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his [Peter Parker's] past love,” he says. “She’s not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson.”

Michelle is just Michelle, and that’s perfect.

Kevin adds, “She was always this new high school character, Michelle, who we know there’s an ‘M’ in Michelle and an ‘M’ in Mary. [laughs] So we’re so clever and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat if her initials were MJ?’”

Spider-Man: Homecoming's Jacob Batalon Wouldn't Say No To Ned Leeds Becoming The Hobgoblin in Future Movies

Spider-Man: Homecoming's Jacob Batalon Wouldn't Say No To Ned Leeds Becoming The Hobgoblin in Future Movies

If you’re a huge, huge, huge Spider-Man fan, you know that one version of Ned Leeds becomes a version of Hobgoblin.

If you seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, however, you know that right now, Ned isn’t going to be turned into that at all, but star Jacob Batalon isn’t ruling it out.

“I’d love to have the glider and all that stuff,” Jacob shared with The Wrap.

But until that day actually comes, he’s happy with this version of Ned.

“I think fans are really going to love seeing Ned being the best friend and the man in front of the screen.”

The Ned Leeds that becomes Hobgoblin was brainwashed into acting as a stand in and fooling the underworld into thinking that he was Hobgoblin.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is out in theaters now.

Zendaya Gets Flowers From Mini Spider-Man During Interview (Video)

We are totally charmed by this mini Spider-Man!

Ahead of cutie Liam‘s interview with stars Zendaya and Tom Holland, he actually brought Zendaya yellow roses — and we are melting over it!

Liam interviewed both of the actors for their new movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, even asking Zendaya on a sort of date, since, you know, he was dressed as Spider-Man.

“If Spider-Man wanted to take you on a date, where would we go?” Liam asked.

“Maybe like, the top of a really cool building with a really great view,” she said.

Zendaya Isn't In 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' As Much As You Think She Is

Zendaya Isn't In 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' As Much As You Think She Is

It looks like Zendaya might not be in Spider-Man: Homecoming as much as we’d like her to be.

In a new piece on Vulture, it’s revealed that the time she’s spent on press tours is more than her presence in the actual movie.

Yes, we know the film isn’t about her character Michelle — the focus is on Peter (Tom Holland), and his journey to how he’s going to be the Spider-Man the world needs him to be.

“She is not present for most of the movie’s major scenes or action set pieces, has no bearing on the plot, and disappears for wide swaths of the film,” the piece reveals. “Spider-Man never saves her, and Peter Parker never kisses her: In fact, he barely seems to know she exists.”

But don’t fear, there’s a silver lining…sort of.

“Near the end of the movie, enough has happened to suggest that Zendaya’s role in the sequel might be commensurate with the part she plays in promoting this franchise,” the piece reveals.

The sequel is about two years away, so we do have to wait a while for that.

JJJ will still be in the theater to see this movie though. Will you be going?

Tom Holland can predict the future, you guys.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming star opened up in a recent interview about how five years ago he put it out into the universe that he wanted to play the superhero, and it came true!

“I was at the Empire Awards in London, and one of the interviewers asked me if I could be a superhero, who would I be? I said, ‘In 10 years, I’d like to be the Spider-Man after Andrew Garfield,’” Tom shared. “I would never have guessed that it would have come true so quickly.”

He’s psychic!

“Putting on the Spider-Man suit is one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me in my entire life,” he added. “I still to this day can’t really believe that it’s happened.”

Tom says, “There’s always a real special moment when I put the suit on, especially in front of little kids and they see the suit and their eyes light up. It reminds you of what a real privilege it is to bring that sort of happiness to people.”

Zendaya Loves That 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Celebrates Diversity

Zendaya Loves That 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Celebrates Diversity

If there’s one thing about Spider-Man: Homecoming that star Zendaya loves, it’s the diversity.

The actress, who plays Michelle in the upcoming flick, spoke with EW about her new movie and how it celebrates diversity.

“That was one of my favorite parts about this movie is the diversity of the cast. It’s reflecting what New York looks like,” she shared. “It should be represented in that way.”

“I think everybody is also very distinct characters and it’s fun to see how everybody works with each other, and I love the awkwardness and the funny that comes out of those real moments in high school that we’ve all been through,” Zendaya added. “The big difference with this movie is the fact that he’s 15 and you really get to see what it would be like if a 15-year-old guy had these powers.”

She continued, “Of course, they’re not going to do everything right. They’re not going to be perfect. They’re going to mess up. They’re going to be a 15-year-old superhero; and I think they did a really great job of capturing that because that’s what makes Spider-Man so real for everybody is that he’s just a kid and just a kid from Queens.”

Zendaya is pictured below, hanging out with some friends in New York City on Wednesday afternoon (June 21).
